Land is a key factor in ensuring sustainable development, both in its environmental protection component and in relation to the social and economic component. As a scarce natural resource, it is the basis for the existence of all ecosystems and life on Earth in general, and is the subject of institutional environmental protection. Land is equally a subject of economic and social development, because it generates wealth and investments, and at the same time provides social security to its users. Assessing the significance of the threat to land as a natural resource, the Sarajevo Canton has prepared a Study of the Use Value of Land in the Sarajevo Canton for the purposes of preparing the Spatial Plan of the Sarajevo Canton for the period 2023 to 2043. The aim of this Study is to determine the balances and quality of land that will serve as the basis for future planning of the development of the Canton and its spatial planning with rational application and optimal use of land resources. The main goal is that future soil protection and agricultural improvement are based on the foundations of the so-called. ecological agriculture, which is today designated in the world as the basis for soil conservation and quality production. The study used the land categorization system "Land capability classification", adapted to the conditions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where land is ranked in eight categories from the best (category I) to the worst (category VIII). The preparation of the Study was based on field and desk work aimed at developing land capability maps M 1:10,000 for all nine municipalities of the Sarajevo Canton, as well as developing maps of agrozones and land damage on the same scale. Sustainable development becomes one of the priority tasks for the land management system with two main goals: 1. to improve and maintain the basic functions of land space that are essential for human well-being and the ecosystem; 2. to design and implement methods, measures and actions that will prevent the deterioration of land space properties that would affect the essential functions of the soil. The main objective of the project "Use value and multipurpose evaluation of agricultural areas of the Sarajevo Canton" is to update the existing database and thematic bases from 2011, agro-ecological regionalization of space, and the development of criteria and instructions for the use of agricultural land for other purposes, which should ultimately result in a quality basis for the development of the new Spatial Plan of the Canton. The main tasks of the project are: inventorying the state and updating data on land cover in the Canton, defining the use value of agricultural areas, agro-ecological regionalization of agricultural areas from the perspective of sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas, and the development of criteria and instructions for the use of agricultural land for other purposes.
