Water protection zones are areas around drinking water sources and water intakes, the aim of which is to protect the quality and quantity of water intended for human consumption. In these zones, restrictions and prohibitions are introduced for activities that could lead to water pollution, reduced flow, land degradation, inappropriate waste disposal, illegal construction, etc. The Sarajevo Canton Development Planning Institute has a database of water protection zones in the Sarajevo Canton. The geometric representation of a water protection zone is a polygon, with the following attributes: source, water protection zone and municipality. The database is available to administrative bodies (municipalities, ministries, etc.) via the WebCity GIS application, using standardized web services: OGC WMS and OGC WFS.
