Section for the protection of cultural, historical and natural heritage for the Regulatory Plan "Alifakovac - Babića bašča"
Bosnia and Herzegovina (bih)

The axis of the area for which the Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage Protection Section for the Regulatory Plan "Alifakovac - Babića bašča" is being prepared is Veliki Alifakovac Street, from Inat-kuća in a northeasterly direction, through the old Alifakovac cemetery to the intersection of Čeljigovića and Podcarine. It is at this intersection that there was a customs post for centuries - malta, where customs-cleared goods arrived by caravans from the east and were directed along a wide cobblestone road to the foot of Alifakovac and further, towards Careva Mahala and Čaršija. The basic urban matrix is represented by narrow winding streets on the sides of which there were continuous soft lines of buildings and courtyard walls. In 1882, there was not a single building in the entire recorded area without a courtyard, and in the northern part of the site, apart from the courtyard, every plot had a garden or orchard. In the middle of the area, along with the development of the four mahalas, the Alifakovac cemetery with its turbes and fountain has been developing for centuries, today a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The tombstones in the form of steles with medieval motifs, found in the cemetery, clearly indicate traces of human presence even before the process of the urbanization model that has survived to this day, which began with the arrival of the Ottomans in the mid-15th century. This document directs planners to the necessary directions of modern development that will provide the necessary quality of life and at the same time preserve the scale, character and other intangible values of life in a traditional residential area. The task of the protection service is to point out the essential values of the environment and propose measures for their preservation, as well as to point out severe forms of destruction of the environment by uncontrolled construction, especially during the last decade.
