Metadata Details: Green Action Plan of the Sarajevo Canton

In June 2021, the Green Action Plan of Sarajevo Canton for the period 2021-2031 was adopted (Official Gazette of Sarajevo Canton, No. 25/21), and was provided with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development EBRD and the Government of Japan. Representatives of interested authorities and institutions participated in the preparation process, and the approach used to address environmental challenges and exploit the opportunities of Sarajevo Canton was designed according to the EBRD methodology developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). The Green Action Plan of Sarajevo Canton clearly defines the vision of sustainable development and strategic goals of the "green canton" with specific medium-term goals for the period until 2025 and long-term goals for the period until 2030. Also, specific tasks and "green" measures were recommended for the sectors of urban planning, transport, energy and construction, water management, industry, waste management, as well as adaptation and resilience measures that are not limited to specific sectors, and which will help in shaping, directing and implementing the policy program of the Sarajevo Canton. For each measure from the Sarajevo Canton Green Action Plan, a brief overview of capital and operational costs, potential financing options was presented, and the next steps, responsibilities and a timeframe for implementation were determined. The objectives of the development of the Sarajevo Canton Green Action Plan were: • Upgrading and updating the recently prepared Sarajevo Canton Environmental Protection Plan (KEAP) and establishing a new Action Plan for the period 2021-2025. • Establishing a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the state of environmental assets on the one hand and economic and social dimensions and goals on the other hand, • Providing the basis for a more optimal allocation of financial and human resources of the Sarajevo Canton with a focus on environmental protection - prioritizing possible policies and investments; • Conducting an analysis of urban ventilation corridors in the Sarajevo Basin and providing conclusions and recommendations on next steps; • Improving the potential to attract donors willing to co-finance and support environmental protection projects; • Ensuring the alignment of the Green Action Plan of the Sarajevo Canton with local policies and strategies.
