Within the local self-government system in the Sarajevo Canton, the local community is a mandatory and closest form of organizing citizens in a local government unit. At the level of municipalities and the City of Sarajevo, local communities enable direct participation of the population in decision-making processes, planning and implementation of local initiatives. The decision on the establishment of a local community defines its name, headquarters, territorial area and organizational structure. Since 2003, the Institute for Development Planning of the Sarajevo Canton has been maintaining and regularly updating a database of local community boundaries for all municipalities and the City of Sarajevo. This database represents a unique spatial register that enables precise definition of the administrative boundaries of local communities. The boundaries are shown geometrically as polygons, with the following key attributes: Name of the municipality and Name of the local community. The database is available to all relevant institutions – municipalities, the City Office, cantonal ministries and other administrative bodies – via the WebCity GIS application, using standardized web services: OGC WMS and OGC WFS. This digital infrastructure enables more efficient planning, coordination and management of local development, and contributes to transparency and accessibility of spatial information to all levels of government in the Sarajevo Canton.
