The study of economic activities was carried out for the needs of the Spatial Plan of the Sarajevo Canton for the period 2003-2023. in two phases. The first phase provided an analysis and assessment of the state of the economy of the Sarajevo Canton as a necessary basis for work on the conception of the Spatial Plan, and the second phase provided opportunities for further development of the economy of the Sarajevo Canton. The focus was on the development of industry, i.e. activities that generate GDP and are the most significant users of space, i.e. those that are most directly connected to space. The first chapter discusses space as a condition of life and the necessity of planning its optimal use, and the experiences of others in the context of spatial planning. The second chapter contains excerpts from the development and planning documentation of the City and later the Sarajevo Canton, projections of the future distribution of industry on the territory of Sarajevo, projections of the development of construction, and visions of the basic concepts of the development of the Sarajevo Canton until 2015. When preparing the study, particular attention was paid to the "European perspectives of spatial development". The third chapter provides an overview and analysis of the development of the economy of the Sarajevo Canton in the post-war period, with a special emphasis on the characteristics of the GDP structure of the Canton. The analysis of the effects of the use of business premises by companies from the Canton was carried out on the basis of a survey conducted among a large number of business entities. The fourth chapter refers to an overview of the achieved level of development of the Sarajevo Canton with a focus on activities that generate GDP. The fifth part is dedicated to the issue of spatial determination of economic activities with a special focus on industry. The sixth part elaborates on the research methodology and the instruments used for surveying and sampling companies from the Sarajevo Canton. The issue of environmental protection is also analyzed with a proposal for a planning approach for further improvement. The seventh part presents a general assessment of the current situation with the possibilities for further development of the economy of the Sarajevo Canton in the context of spatial planning. The eighth part refers to a short and concise summary of the key findings of the research. Finally, the ninth and tenth parts present the appendices, as well as the data sources and literature used. Therefore, the main goal of researching economic activities in the Sarajevo Canton area in this project is to create a basis for assessing the situation and planning the efficient use of space in the Sarajevo Canton.
