The World Reference Base (WRB) is an international system for soil classification. It is designed to enable the representation of every soil type that exists in the world. The WRB is based on the World Soil Map Legend (FAO-Unesco, 1998). The WRB is an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS). Since the geospatial database for Pedology was created according to a study conducted in 2001, these data do not conform to the State Standard for Technical Specifications of Geospatial Information in Albania. Topic: Pedology.
The preparation of the soil map for the Republic of Albania according to the WRB system (World Reference Base for Soil Resources, 1998) was carried out within the framework of the INTERREG II Programme sponsored by the European Commission and the Italian Government, aiming at the creation of a national soil database at a scale of 1:250,000. The project was implemented by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari together with the Soil Research Institute, Tirana.
